Question

What do I do if my computer freezes when starting up?

Answer

This is an indication of too many incorrect shut downs. If the progress bar freezes (seen below) during the start up process, you will need to perform a PRAM Reset. You will know if there is an issue with your restart if your mouse does not appear in the top left hand corner after the loading bar has reached a third of the way.

In order to perform a PRAM reset you will need to:

  1. Hold down Command+Option+P+R on reboot, until the computer chimes.

  2. Once the computer restarts, release the keys you were holding, and allow the computer to continue booting as normal.

  3. A way to avoid having the problem repeat is to run the available OSX updates. These updates provide improvements that will prevent this problem happening again.
