Question

What do I do if my computer freezes when starting up?

Answer

This is an indication of too many incorrect shut downs. If the progress bar freezes (seen below) during the start up process, you will need to perform a PRAM reset. You will know your restart is bad if your mouse doesn't not appear in the top left hand corner after the loading bar has reached a third of the way.

In order to perform a PRAM reset you will need to:

  1. Hold down Command+Option+P+R on reboot, until the computer chimes 3 times

  2. Once the computer restarts, hold down the Power Button until it shuts down, then press the key again to turn the machine back on.

  3. A way to avoid having the problem repeat is to run the available OSX updates. These updates provide improvements that will prevent this problem happening again.
